Armed with 30 minutes of sleep and Photo/Video Camera equipment we headed on down to Ocho Rios for a legendary shoot. How legendary of a shoot? Well more legendary that a fight between mew and mewtwo, more legendary than the avatar beating the fire lord, more… never mind, you get the idea. It was a face-off between legends. Two of the most renowned double six inline motors to be gifted to the JDM community. Ultimately leading to a question that has caused a severe division among automotive enthusiasts around the world – Supra or Skyline?
Then there is this guy, Andrew Lui. Owner of both: a JZA80 TOYOTA SUPRA and a NISSAN SKYLINE BNR34GTR. A Chinese/Jamaican National who came to our little Island when he was Three (3) years old but even at this age, cars were what interested him. When he exited high school back in 05 at16 years of age, his uncle gave him a 95 AE110 Toyota Corolla. I guess you could say from there the JDM bug bit Andrew really deep. If you don’t think so please bear in mind that Andrew has in his stable, A Skyline r32,r33,r34 and r35GTR, 2 Supras and an s15 silvia; if that’s not enough evidence then we don’t know what is.
The Skyline was the first to make an appearance gorgeous in white with black rims and blue brake calipers which was a nice touch. Seconds later the supra showed up looking devilish in black; so shiny one would think it just rolled off the assembly line. Looking at both cars you could have felt an aura of awesomeness that was created by these two cars. We weren’t the only ones who felt it. Bystanders at the gas station all gathered to see what was so special about these two or to sub-consciously question their allegiance – supra or skyline?
Now if one was to get their hands on anyone of these cars, the first thing to do is to see how they can wring out all the horsepower you can find. However, this wasn’t the case for Mr. Lui, the other supra that was mentioned earlier, is dedicated to just that – making power! Hence, this beast of an automobile is just to enjoy a cruise now and then, grabbing attention like Skylines at a Honda meet.
Supra: Engine Code 2JZ. 3L Twin Turbo. Rwd.
The motor for the supra remains stock with the only additions being a HKS Bov to give that extremely sweet sneezing sound. Titanium Exhaust so u can hear from the 2jz as it effortlessly blows past you. The exterior is mildly adjusted with a TRD front bumper lip and 18” GTC Wheels. The interior remains stock minus the addition of black Recaros.
Skyline: Engine code RB26DETT. 2.6L inline 6 twin turbo, 4wd
Like the Supra, Andrew hasn’t done much to Godzilla’s power plant. The only modifications being that of a 3.5” Exhaust which was fabricated by Andrew so he can hear the music of us car people. The addition of the HKS mushroom filters adds a nice touch under the hood. Rotora Calipers were added for stopping power, the wheels of choice for this machine were 18’” Rays TE37’s. The skyline sports an Apexi Power FC to tune air and fuel mixture. The interior is left untouched except a few gauges to monitor performance.
Both cars have some similarities but each is special in its own way as was expressed by Andrew. When asked to describe the feel of both cars Andrew expressed to Jamaican Tuner that the Skyline felt more in control because of the 4wd while in the Supra things can get wild because of the rwd platform. If he was to compare it to the other cars he has owned such as the Silvia, the Supra is more of a mature rwd car.
At the time of our shoot the R34 was up for sale and while my mind said yes my pockets were in disagreement. Why sell? Andrew expressed that it was in order to have an even mightier Godzilla parked in his drive way. YES – an R35GTR! Why sell the skyline and not the supra to this Andrew said “I’ve had the skyline and drove it for the better part of 4 years but the supra he just got and wasn’t ready to part ways with this black beauty”. In this case it was Supra, not Skyline; nevertheless, the battle still ensues.
Mr. Lui, like Paul Walker (may his soul rest in peace) has great love and appreciation for these petrol fueled tarmac tyrants, similarly, having multiples of each for a different purpose. Andrew mentioned that these are just a few of the rides on his bucket list. If the car game is anything like Dominoes, Andrew plays in reverse, collecting all the pieces and winning with the Double Six.
Mad Shout- Out to Ziggy and Garfield chief mechanics on the Skyline and Supra.
